Perhentian Islands Accommodation Guide: Where to Stay, How to Book & What to Expect

If you’re planning a trip to Malaysia’s east coast, chances are you’ve already heard about the Perhentian Islands. And honestly? They look like something out of a screensaver!

But here’s the thing most people get stuck on first: choosing your perfect Perhentian Islands accommodation.

Because even though the islands are small, your experience can change completely depending on where you stay.

Quiet jungle vibes? Busy beach energy? Budget huts or beachfront resorts? It all depends.

So in this guide, I’ll walk you through everything I learned while staying there, from which island to choose, to where to book, to what actually makes sense depending on your travel style.

Let’s get into it!

First Things First: Which Island Should You Stay On?

The Perhentians are made up of two main islands:

  • Pulau Perhentian Besar (the bigger island)
  • Pulau Perhentian Kecil (the smaller island)

And even though they’re close to each other, they feel surprisingly different.

Coral Bay showing off at its best! Calm turquoise water, tropical shoreline, lsuh jungles hiding rustic accommodations, and a small fishermen’s boat drifting across the bay that makes the whole scene feel almost unreal.

Perhentian Besar (Big Island)

This is the more “resort-style” island. Everything feels a bit more polished and structured.

You’ll find:

  • More organised resorts
  • A calmer, quieter atmosphere
  • Fewer backpackers
  • Generally higher prices
  • More activities

So, if you want comfort, convenience, and a slightly more relaxed resort feel, this might suit you better.

However, it can feel a bit more touristy and less “raw island adventure”.

Perhentian Kecil (Small Island)

This is where things get a bit more interesting.

Most travellers looking for a more laid-back, budget-friendly, or social vibe end up here. And that includes us.

Perhentian Kecil accommodation is split into different areas, and each one feels like its own little world. Because we stayed in Perhentian Kecil, I’ll mainly be focussing on accommodation options here, although this guide applies to both islands still.

Accommodation on Perhentian Kecil

Long Beach (Eastern side)

Long Beach is the main hub.

This is where you’ll find most of the:

  • Loads of accommodation options
  • Easy access to food and shops
  • Great for social travellers
  • Easy to book tours and activities
  • More “action” and energy overall

It’s lively, convenient, and very easy to settle into.

But it does come with trade-offs.

  • Can get crowded, especially in peak season
  • More expensive accommodation
  • Very windy at times (especially at night)
  • Some areas feel a bit overdeveloped
  • Day trips can make the beach busy
  • Overall, most activities here are more expensive, including boat rides to other beaches/islands

So while Long Beach is fun and convenient, it’s not exactly peaceful all the time.

Coral Bay (Western side)

Now this is the complete opposite energy.

Coral Bay is quieter, slower, and more relaxed.

  • Much quieter with noticeably fewer crowds, especially at night
  • Relaxed, laid-back beach atmosphere
  • A stronger sense of local life and culture
  • Beautiful sunsets
  • Cleaner, more relaxed atmosphere
  • Cheaper snorkelling/day trips
  • Locals are often more helpful and friendly (from our experience)

Cons of Coral Bay:

  • Fewer restaurants
  • Very limited accommodation options
  • Only one small shop for basics (snacks, drinks, toiletries)
  • Less nightlife and activity
  • Not as many tour operators nearby

So it really depends:

Long Beach = social, busy, convenient
Coral Bay = quiet, slow, peaceful

Southern Side (Hidden Option)

There’s also a quieter southern stretch of Perhentian Kecil.

This area is:

  • Very peaceful
  • More remote
  • Less developed

But it also means:

  • Fewer facilities
  • Limited food options
  • Less transport convenience

This is more for travellers who really want to disconnect.

Best Types of Accommodation on Perhentian Islands

Now let’s talk about the actual accommodation on Perhentian Islands.

There’s a HUGE range.

You’ll find:

  • Basic beach huts
  • Mid-range chalets
  • Boutique resorts
  • Luxury beachfront stays

Prices can go from around $20/night all the way up to $500/night+.

Yes, it’s a massive gap.

So the key question is not “what’s best?”

And usually I ask 3 questions:
1. “What kind of trip do I actually want?”
2. “What is your budget?”
3. “How much time will you actually spend at the accommodation?”

If you’re out exploring all day, you probably don’t need luxury.
But if you’re here for a slow, relaxing escape, comfort might matter more.

Where We Stayed on Perhentian Island (Real Experience Example): Butterfly Chalet

We stayed at Butterfly Chalet on Perhentian Kecil (Coral Bay side), and honestly, it was exactly what we wanted.

It was simple. Almost off-grid. Nothing fancy. You can see some pictures below.

There also wasn’t any elecxtricity during the day, and this is where the question “How much time will you actually spend at the accommodation?” comes in handy. We weren’t going to be there AT ALL during the day, so why does electricity matter?

We had what we needed: a cold shower, a toilet, a bed, a fan, electricity at night, and an INCREDIBLE VIEW for waking up in the mornings (which is what we prioritised).

Now even something that looks this bad cost us $20/night, which isn’t bad, but it’s not what we’re used to when we “budget travel.” But it was still one of the cheapest options on the islands.

How to Find Accommodation on Perhentian Islands

Now this part is important, because booking here works differently compared to big cities.

1. Booking.com (Easiest Option)

If you want something simple, start here.

For most travellers, this is the safest option for Perhentian Kecil hotel and resort bookings.

How to use it:

  • Enter your dates
  • Be specific with location (e.g. “Coral Bay” instead of just “Perhentian Islands”)
  • Use filters (aircon, breakfast, wifi, etc.)
  • Compare options
  • Book directly

💡 Tip: Sometimes app bookings are slightly cheaper than desktop.

2. Booking Direct via Hotel Websites

Some resorts don’t list on booking platforms at all.

So you might need to:

  • Search on Google Maps
  • Click into the property
  • Check their official website
  • Compare prices across platforms

This can actually be cheaper in some cases, especially for Perhentian Kecil resort stays.

3. Booking Direct via WhatsApp (Yes… really)

This is where things get interesting and possibly very uniquely Malaysian.

Some smaller places don’t have proper booking systems. Instead, they use WhatsApp.

We did this ourselves.

We contacted a small chalet, confirmed availability, sent a deposit via Wise, and that was it.

It sounds chaotic, and honestly, it is a bit and it was a bit stressful. The only reason we “risked” something like this was because we knew other people who did it this way.

Safety tips if you do this at any other accommodation:

  • Always check reviews online first (on Google and other sites)
  • Use official contact numbers
  • Never pay full amount upfront
  • Book early and reconfirm before arrival

Cost of Accommodation on Perhentian Islands

Here’s what you should realistically expect:

  • Budget stays: ~$20–$50/night
  • Mid-range: ~$80–$200/night
  • Resorts: $200–$500+/night

So yes, accommodation on Perhentian Islands is not always “backpacker cheap”.

But it is flexible.

You can genuinely choose your experience based on budget.

How to Get to Your Accommodation on Perhentian Island

Getting around is simple, but not what most people expect.

And first, you need to get to Perhentian Islands. For that, you can check out this detailed blog post: How to Get to Perhentian Island: The Complete Travel Guide for First-Time Visitors.

You can simply book a ferry to the pier where your accommodation is located. For example, if you book accommodation on Long Beach, book a ferry to Long Beach.

There are no real roads in many areas, no cars or taxis or bikes, and mostly walking or boat transfers.

If you have accessibility issues or travel with kids, definitely figure out what that trip from the pier to your accommodation looks like.

Typically:

  1. Boat to main jetty
  2. Walk to accommodation
  3. Occasionally short jungle paths

For example, from Coral Bay jetty to where we stayed (Butterfly Chalet), it was a slow 10-15 minute walk over soft sand (but the sand was mostly shells so painful to walk on barefoot), then over some rocks, then on a bumpy old concrete path with a bit of stairs. No shade!

Extra Tips Most People Don’t Tell You

  • Book early during peak season (places sell out fast)
  • Don’t rely on Google Maps for everything. Distances can feel different on the ground and that “5-minute walk” is actually a 15-minute crawl because of the terrain
  • Pack light (you’ll be walking with bags)
  • Cash is still widely used on the islands (mostly in fact)
  • WiFi can be slow depending on where you stay )if you have wifi at all)

Final Thoughts on Perhentian Island Accommodation

Choosing your Perhentian islands accommodation really sets the tone for your entire trip.

Long Beach gives you energy, convenience, and social life.

Coral Bay gives you calm, space, and a slower rhythm.

And somewhere in between is your perfect stay depending on what you’re looking for.

There’s no “best” choice here. Just different versions of paradise.

So take your time, pick the vibe that fits you, and don’t overthink it too much.
